The Trichord Traffic Viewer™:
A Traffic Management System on your Desktop

The Trichord Traffic Viewer™ displays real-time traffic speed data for select highways across Northern Virginia. Users can track and update incident information using the traffic viewer’s Incident Management Information System, and can display and track point-to-point travel times along highways in the area of coverage. The Trichord Traffic Viewer™ is designed for media outlets, companies operating vehicle fleets, and public sector agencies – it can be used as a “wireless traffic management system on a desktop” when deployed on a laptop with a wireless internet connection.

The Trichord Traffic Viewer™

The Trichord Traffic Viewer™ provides the following benefits:

  • Real-time traffic data, updated every minute

  • Precise speed data and point-to-point travel times

  • "At-a-glance" access to regional traffic speeds

  • Customizable speed alerts that call attention to significant changes in traffic conditions

  • Comparison of current travel times to historical 30-day average

  • Password-protected access facilitates cooperative traffic management - groups of users can share information among themselves

  • Quantitative traffic data, available during periods of inclement weather - when many cameras cannot see what is happening

  • Quantitative traffic data, available during periods of heightened security - when flight restrictions prevent aircraft from flying over some locations
Features of The Trichord Traffic Viewer™

The Real-time Congestion Map: The centerpiece of the software’s user-friendly interface is a vector-based Real-time Congestion Map, whose road segments are color-coded according to current reported traffic speeds. When the user holds their mouse over a road segment, a “speed bubble” pops up, showing the current reported speed. The speed data displayed on the map is updated once each minute, and if a road segment changes color due to the update, the segment willflash to call attention to it. The current time and the time of the last update are displayed above the map. Through data filters, the user can control what information is displayed on the map – including secondary roads, exits, map text, and incident icons.

The Incident Management Information System: The Incident Management Information System allows the user to track incidents that affect traffic flow. The user can place an icon on the map at an incident’s location and then enter information - such as what is happening at the scene, who is responding, whether lanes are closed, etc. When the incident is cleared, and the user marks it for deletion, the incident’s icon will gradually fade away, representing the residual effects on traffic flow.

The Travel Time Information System: The Trichord Traffic Viewer™ allows the user to display point-to-point travel times along monitored roadways. Once the user has customized their route, the travel time will be updated each minute. In addition to the current travel time along the route, the Trichord Traffic Viewer™ will display the difference between the current time and the historical, 30-day average travel time. If an HOV travel time is available, this will also be displayed.

By holding the cursor over a displayed travel time, the user can access
historical travel time information, HOV travel times (if available),
and the difference between the historical and current travel time.

The Speed Alert Function: Trichord Traffic Viewer™ users can set a low-speed threshold along a road segment, and receive a visual alert when the reported speed along that segment falls below the threshold.

A Tool for Fleet Operators
Fleet operators who use centralized dispatching can use the Trichord Traffic Viewer™ to more efficiently route their vehicles around congestion and traffic incidents. The Travel Time Information System allows fleet operators to give more precise arrival time estimates to their customers.

A Tool for Emergency Responders
The Trichord Traffic Viewer™ is a compact software application that, when loaded onto a laptop with a wireless internet connection, becomes a "Wireless Traffic Management System on a Desktop" that can be used practically anywhere - allowing anyone who needs a comprehensive picture of current traffic conditions to get exactly that, no matter where they happen to be.

Coverage Area
The Northern Virginia edition of the Trichord Traffic Viewer™ displays traffic data from the following roadways: I-66, I-95, I-395, and I-495.
